BYU Spectacular

 BYU brought the Young Ambassadors to China 40 years ago in 1979.   It was quite a miraculous feat.   Well, this year they not only brought the Young Ambassadors for a 40-year reunion but they brought 8 other performing arts groups with them.   They performed in Beijing, Shanghai, and yes, Xi’an.   We’ve known about it for months.   When the tickets went on sale in April, Kim and I talked and decided to buy a whole row of tickets and give a ticket to one student in each of our classes.   A row is 17 tickets.   We have 11 classes between the 2 of us.   I’ve had contact with several of my students from last year so Kim suggested I give the remainder 6 to some of my former students.   At first ,I didn’t know which 6 to give them to.   A couple were obvious to me.   But once I started offering tickets, it came down to just 6 that were able to attend that night. National Day

October 1 is National Day in China.  I think it's similar to our Independence Day.  They celebrate for the whole week though, which is good for us because that means a whole week with no school.  So what do you do with a whole week off from school?  You travel and see China.  We went on an organized tour for the English Teachers here from BYU that are living in all areas of China.   A couple of other foreign teachers had gotten wind of it and asked if they could also go.  Of course! There were about 40 people in our group.  We flew first to Urumqi in the far northwest part of China, in the Xinjiang Province.  We went to a museum of the Ughur region and then Muslim Bazaar with some great shopping.  The next day we took a bus to Turpan, Xinjiang.  China has a lot of people with a lot of huge cities, but it also has miles and miles of open territory.  The western part is quite mountainous and desserty.  If those are word...

Chengdu Pandas and LeShan Buddha

After our  After our trip to Shanghai and Japan we went back to Xi'an.  Then we took Barbara Openshaw with us on the fast train and went to see Chengdu, south of here and about 3 hours on the train, which travels at 300 KPH. Chengdu has the largest panda reserve in the world.  It was amazing and can't wait to go there again. Almost! The first few pandas we saw were in buildings, but soon we found the area where they are outside in their natural habitat. Isn't that the cutest face you ever saw? This guy was way up in a tree that wasn't big enough to support his weight.  But somehow it did.  We thought he was going to fall a couple of times! Playing and wrestling together. Just enjoying some bamboo!  YUM! After eating all the bamboo, they need a nap!   WE loved going to Chengdu and seeing the Pandas. They are such beautiful, cuddly looking animals.  They appear so calm and peace...
